In the article "I Uncle, Buy Me A Contraceptive..." from
How to Read Donald Duck: Imperialist Ideology in the Disney Comic , the authors discuss how women and children are portrayed in Disney cartoons and comics. Most of them are subordinate and fail to challenge the authority of men. Female characters like Daisy and Minnie are seductresses which is really their only power. In the duck clan, a biological father is missing but the patriarchy continues with the uncle in authority.

ReplyDeleteI agree, and while reading the article again I focused on the fact that Disney's characters don't have parents. I looked at the picture above of the princesses and they indeed lacked one if not both parents. I tried to think of one Disney movie where the main character had both parents and thought about The Lion King. Yet this movie still falls into the article's description because Simba's father dies, and the blame is placed on him by his uncle. He leaves the pride and grows up parent-less. Eventually, he has a happy ending and does procreate, but this was the only example I can think of and they are not even human characters.
